Growing a Lawn From Seed in a Hot Place

Hydroseed lawn installation in Austin is the route most homeowners we work with take from a bare, graded yard to grass without paying for sod. Seed, fertilizer, wood fiber mulch and a tackifier get blended in the tank and sprayed over soil we have already prepared. The mulch holds water against the seed, keeps it from washing off in a thunderstorm and shades it from the sun. Within about a week, under good conditions, the yard turns from tan mulch to green fuzz. This page covers the residential side of what we do: new-build lawns, yards stripped by a remodel or a septic or pool job, and lawn renovation where the old turf has given up.

Who usually calls

New homeowners whose builder handed over a lot with no grass. Families who just finished a pool, an addition or a drainage project. People who lost a lawn to drought, pests or shade and want to start over. And landlords who need a bare backyard covered before the next tenant. If more than half the yard is bare or full of weeds, a full hydroseed lawn usually beats patching. If the lawn is mostly there and just thin, overseeding or spot repair may be enough, and we will tell you that.

Prep matters more than the spray

On the west side of town, soil can be a few inches of gravelly clay loam over limestone. We check depth with a probe, and where there is less than about four inches we recommend topsoil before seeding. On the east side, heavy clay is the issue. Some Austin-area clays have pronounced shrink-swell behavior and are hard to work under most moisture conditions, so we fine grade when the soil crumbles, not when it smears. Either way, rocks and old roots come out, low spots are filled, and the grade runs away from the house before any seed goes down.

Choosing the seed

Austin lawns are warm-season grass. Bermuda is the standard for full sun: it starts growing above roughly 59 degrees, thrives in heat, spreads by runners and rhizomes, and goes tan and dormant in winter. It does not like dense shade. Buffalograss, a native prairie grass, is used for low-water lawns and recovers from drought through its runners. It suits big, sunny yards where irrigation is limited or where you want less mowing. We talk through how the yard is used, how much water you are willing to put on it and how much shade there is, then pick the mix.

When to seed

The best lawns we see are sprayed from mid-spring into early summer. Austin's average last freeze is about February 15, but warm-season seed wants warm soil, so we usually start in April. That gives the grass time to root before the stretch from about May 30 to mid-September when daytime highs average 90 or more. Early fall seeding can work. Late fall is a gamble because the grass goes dormant around the first freeze, which averages December 1. For a late-season yard, hydromulch now and seed in spring is often the better plan.

Hydroseeding cost and what drives it

The table below shows published ranges. On a typical Austin lot the price moves with square footage, access for the hose, how much prep is needed, slope, and the seed mix. HomeGuide notes that most hydroseeding companies have a minimum job fee, and steep slopes cost more because they need more material. Native and specialty seed costs more than common Bermuda. We put every one of those items on the quote so you can compare it with other hydroseeding services line by line.

After we leave

You will get written steps. In short: keep the top half inch damp for about three weeks, using several short cycles a day in heat rather than one long soak; stay off it; and mow for the first time when the grass is about four inches tall, which Angi puts at about six weeks after spraying. Feed it again after the first few mows. Call us if bare streaks show up in the first month. Thin spots after a storm are normal and easy to touch up.

Hydroseed Lawn Installation Questions

What does a hydroseed lawn cost in Austin?

HomeGuide's national range for hydroseeding is $0.12 to $0.35 a square foot, which works out to $1,000 to $1,750 for a yard of about 5,000 square feet. Thin soil that needs topsoil, slopes and specialty seed push it up. We measure and give you a written number.

Can I hydroseed over my existing dead lawn?

Not directly. Dead turf and weeds block seed from reaching soil. We kill or remove what is there, loosen the surface and then spray. For a lawn that is thin but alive, overseeding may be enough.

Bermuda or buffalograss for my yard?

Bermuda for full sun, kids and dogs, and a lawn you are willing to water. Buffalograss for big sunny areas where you want less water and less mowing. Neither does well in heavy shade.

Why does the new lawn look blue-green the first day?

That is the mulch and a dye in the slurry so we can see even coverage. It fades within days and the grass comes up through it.

Do I have to water every day?

For the first three weeks or so, yes, light and often. The seed only needs the surface damp, but in Austin heat the surface dries fast. After the grass is up you water less often and deeper.
