Seeding Near the Springs

Hydroseeding in San Marcos is closely tied to water quality. The San Marcos River rises from San Marcos Springs, the third-largest group of springs in Texas, fed by the Edwards Aquifer into Spring Lake. The river has never run dry in recorded history, and the springs are home to endangered and threatened species including the Texas blind salamander, the fountain darter and Texas wild rice. Sediment from construction is a direct threat to that kind of habitat.

On the Balcones Fault

San Marcos sits right on the Balcones Fault, the boundary between the Hill Country to the west and the Coastal Plains to the east. That means rocky, thin-soil lots on the west side and deeper ground to the east. We plan topsoil, grading and mulch type around which side of the city the job is on.

Recharge zone ground

The Edwards Aquifer's recharge zone, where surface water soaks into the aquifer, follows the Balcones Fault line. Anything that washes off a site there can end up in the aquifer. Silt fence, inlet protection and covering bare soil quickly are basic courtesy to everyone downstream, and often a project requirement.

Lots of rivers and creeks

Besides the San Marcos, the Blanco River and Cottonwood, Purgatory, Sink and Willow Springs creeks all run through the city, and each has parks or nature preserves along it. Many lots are near one of them. Banks and channels get blankets or bonded fiber matrix, not light mulch.

A fast-growing college town

In 2013 and 2014 the Census Bureau named San Marcos the fastest-growing city in the United States, and Texas State University continues to grow. Student housing, apartments, new homes and commercial projects all need seeding and stabilization.

Where we help

  • Construction site hydroseeding and hydromulch
  • Silt fence and sediment control near creeks
  • Lawn installation for new homes

San Marcos Questions

Is my site over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone?

Parts of San Marcos along the Balcones Fault are. Your engineer or the city can confirm. Either way, we plan sediment control as if it matters, because downstream it does.

Can you seed near the river or a creek bank?

Yes, where you have permission to work. On banks we lay erosion control blankets or spray bonded fiber matrix to keep the seed from sliding into the water.

Do you work on student housing and apartment projects?

Yes. We handle hydroseeding, hydromulch and silt fence on multifamily and commercial sites.

Can you use native grasses instead of turf?

On larger lots and open space, yes. Native mixes need less water once established but take longer to fill in.
