Clay Good Enough for Bricks
Hydroseeding in Elgin means working with clay, and lots of it. The town had two big brick and tile plants by 1940, and a third brick company came in the mid-1950s, drawn by the high-quality clay deposits in the area. Clay that makes good brick also makes a demanding seedbed: it seals, crusts and cracks if it is not handled with care.
Prepping clay for seed
We avoid working clay when it is wet, because it smears and dries into a hard crust. Instead we grade when the soil is crumbly, leave a slightly rough surface, and let the hydromulch hold moisture against the seed. On the worst spots, adding a few inches of topsoil gives grass a better start than any amendment alone.
A river that moved a railroad
The Houston and Texas Central line was first planned to follow the Colorado River toward Austin. A major Colorado River flood in 1869 led to the route being moved, and the line through Elgin was the result. That history is a fair reminder that flooding shapes land use here. Lots that take on runoff need grading and stabilized swales, not just grass.
Three counties, one town
Most of Elgin is in Bastrop County, with parts extending into Travis and Williamson counties. Drainage and erosion control expectations can differ by jurisdiction, so we ask early which county or city is reviewing your project.
Farm towns turning suburban
Elgin grew slowly from 1,258 people in 1904 to 4,846 in 1990 as a cotton and farm town. The 1900 cotton crop was a bumper one. Today the open land along US 290 and SH 95 is seeing new homes and small commercial sites that need lawn installation, silt fence and site stabilization.

Elgin Questions
Why does my yard turn to concrete in summer?
Heavy clay dries hard and cracks. Good grading, a full stand of grass and regular watering all help, and topsoil on top of clay gives roots an easier start.
Which county rules apply to my site?
It depends where in Elgin you are, since the city spans Bastrop, Travis and Williamson counties. We will ask about your permit before planning sediment control.
Can you seed a large rural lot or pasture edge?
Yes. Hydroseeding is efficient on big open areas, and we can use a pasture or native mix where a manicured lawn is not the goal.
When is clay too wet to seed?
If it sticks to your boots in clumps, it is too wet to grade. We wait for it to dry enough to crumble.
