Hydroseeding in Austin, TX

Getting the Dirt Right First

Fine grading and topsoil prep in Austin is the step that decides whether a hydroseed lawn thrives or struggles. We do yard grading, land grading on larger parcels, topsoil delivery and spreading, and the small dirt work that goes with seeding: filling low spots, cutting shallow swales, removing rock and roots, and shaping the grade so water leaves the house. Most of our grading is done ahead of our own seeding, but we also prep ground for sod and landscape crews.

Thin soil in the west

In the hills west of the city, the soil is often shallow, gravelly clay loam over limestone. You can see it in any road cut: a dark band a few inches deep on top of pale rock. Grass can survive there, but it dries out fast and roots cannot go deep. Where depth is short we import screened topsoil, spread it over the area to be seeded, and blend it into the native soil so there is no hard line between them. Rock that a box blade turns up is raked and hauled.

Heavy clay in the east

East of the fault, the soils are deep but often heavy clay. Some of them shrink and swell strongly and are hard to work under most moisture conditions. Graded wet, clay smears into a slick that sheds water and seals over the seed. Graded bone dry, it turns into clods. We schedule grading on clay for the days it crumbles and leave a slightly rough finish for seed to lodge in. Low spots on flat prairie lots hold water for days, so even a small amount of fall away from the house makes a big difference.

Drainage, trenching and the house

Good grade slopes away from the foundation and then carries water to the curb, a swale or an inlet. On many lots that means correcting what a builder left or what years of settling changed. When a drainage fix needs a buried pipe, the same people who grade your yard dig the excavation and trenching for it, whether that is a French drain, a downspout run or a swale, then backfill, regrade and seed over the top. Bigger cuts, retaining walls and structural work go to the right specialists, and we will say so.

Topsoil: what and how much

Not everything sold as topsoil is good for a lawn. We look for screened soil without rock and debris, and we avoid heavy clay fill for seeding on the west side. Spread depth depends on what is there. On bare rock or caliche-like subsoil, a few inches makes the difference between a lawn that browns in a week of heat and one that holds. Material, delivery and spreading are priced separately by most sources, and so are they on our quotes.

Austin's soils are alkaline

Many Austin soils, especially the clay-rich ones, are slightly to moderately alkaline and carry free calcium carbonate. That affects how some nutrients behave. For larger lawns or problem areas we can take a soil sample before seeding so the fertilizer in the slurry fits the ground instead of guessing.

What you end up with

A lot that drains, soil deep enough to hold water for a few days in summer, and a surface ready for hydroseed the same week. If you are seeding yourself or laying sod, we can stop at the finished grade.

How Grading Goes

1. Look at the water

We check where water sits and where it should go, and probe for soil depth.

2. Rough shape

Cut high spots and fill low ones so water runs off the slab and out to a place it can drain safely.

3. Soil

Topsoil spread and blended where needed, rock and debris removed.

4. Fine grade

Final surface left smooth enough to mow, rough enough for seed to lodge.

5. Seed or hand off

We hydroseed, or leave it ready for your sod or landscape crew.

Fine Grading & Topsoil Prep Questions

How much topsoil do I need over limestone?

It depends on what is already there. We probe the soil and recommend enough to give roots room. Where there are only an inch or two over rock, a few more inches makes a big difference in summer.

Can you fix water pooling by my foundation?

Often, yes. We reshape the soil so it drops away from the slab and, where needed, add a shallow drain or swale. If the problem is structural, we will tell you to bring in a foundation or drainage engineer.

Do you haul away the rock and debris?

Yes. Rock, roots and debris that come up in grading are raked out and hauled unless you want them kept on site.

Is grading worth doing before hydroseeding?

Almost always. Seed follows the surface it lands on, so a lumpy, poorly drained yard becomes a lumpy, poorly drained lawn.
