446 Feet of Elevation Change

Hydroseeding in Lago Vista is mostly slope work. Much of the city sits on a peninsula on the north shore of Lake Travis, and the land rises from about 774 feet at the shoreline to 1,220 feet near Rusty Allen Airport. The area is steep limestone hills and canyons, some of the highest in Travis County. Grass does not come easy here, and erosion does.

Canyonlands next door

Lago Vista sits next to, and partly within, the Balcones Canyonlands. Rugged canyon edges and wooded slopes are common on residential lots. When a lot is cleared for a home, the exposed cut and fill banks need stabilization quickly, usually with seed under either bonded fiber matrix or erosion control blankets.

Short trip to the lake

The Colorado River, here in the form of Lake Travis, runs right along the city. On a steep lot, there is not much distance for sediment to settle before it reaches the water. Silt fence at the toe of slopes, rock or wattles at drainage outlets, and fast cover on bare ground are the basics.

Building is picking up

Travis County grew 26.9 percent between 2010 and 2020, but Lago Vista grew 47.3 percent. More homes on more steep lots means more driveway cuts, septic fields and graded pads that need seeding and slope stabilization.

What grows on rock

With thin soil over limestone, a full turf lawn needs imported topsoil. Many owners prefer to keep turf small near the house and use native grasses or wildflowers on the rest of the slope, which are better suited to dry, rocky ground.

Typical Lago Vista requests

  • Slope stabilization on new lots
  • Native seeding on cleared hillsides
  • Silt fence above the lake
  • Small lawn areas with topsoil

Lago Vista Questions

Can hydroseed hold on a really steep cut?

On very steep cuts we use bonded fiber matrix or blankets with seed. Some slopes also need terracing or rock, and we will say so if that is the case.

What should I plant on a rocky hillside?

Native grasses and wildflowers usually do better than turf on thin, dry soil, and they need much less water.

Do I need erosion control while my house is built?

On a sloped lot near the lake, yes. Silt fence at the bottom and cover on bare soil keep your lot from washing into the lake or onto the road.

Can you reach lots with tricky access?

Usually. We can run hose a long way from the truck. Tell us about the driveway and slope when you call.
